Great post Jay! And you really do notice (and appreciate) the difference between colleagues who will listen and answer your question, as opposed to those who just point you to documentation because they're too busy to help.

Thanks Melissa. I hadn't even thought of the non-help RTFM response. That's almost worse because then they *claim* to have helped. Oy vey, I feel another post coming on!

One way to get more done is to write good documentation. Its like having multiple copies of yourself. You shouldn't be repeatedly answering the same question. Instead people should be reading your good documentation (FAQ, manual, whatever) for getting the answers they need.

Sometimes the canned RTFM response isn't appropriate but there certainly are times when its useful to refer people to documentation.
